Toshiba<6502.T> to make more cell phone LCDs-paper

TOKYO, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp is expected to produce more colour liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile phones to meet strong demand for the high resolution panels, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Tuesday.

The business daily said the company will boost output to five million panels during the second half of the business year through the end of March, up more than 230 percent from 1.5 million displays produced in the first half.

The company was not available for immediate comment.

Despite the slowdown in overall sales of mobile phones, those equipped with the LCD colour panels are selling the best, as the growing popularity of Internet-enabled and camera phones increase demand for the high-resolution displays.

The company's output of the low temperature, polysilicon displays is expected to jump another five million panels to 11.5 million in the 2002/03 business year, the paper said.

Toshiba provides screens for their own handsets as well as for those made by Fujitsu Ltd <6702.T>.

In late August, the company announced steep workforce reductions and an aggressive restructuring plan to cope with the worst-ever downturn in the global semiconductor industry.

Shares in Toshiba have fallen 35 percent in the year to date, in line with the 30 percent drop in the benchmark Nikkei average.
