Hi Frank,

It's interesting to me that we have media information available on the SAS operatives not far from Kabul. On the surface, one could conclude that letting a naive Western citizenry in on a secret about an intelligence operation already so close to Kabul would be quite reassuring. However, further investigation has led me to conclude that this forward listening post is actually most likely within territory controlled by the Tajiks (Northern Alliance), or in a no man's land not under Taliban control.

There's a very interesting book on the use of the media that was recently discussed by the author, John R. Macarthur, on a CNN segment. It will behoove us to be aware that under an information embargo from the military, any and all information presented to the American public about ground and air operations in theatre must be taken with a grain of salt. We simply won't be getting un-spun and unvarnished truths until well after the fact. Here's the Macarthur book:

Finally, squirt transmission is a term I'd not heard before. But "burst" transmission is something I'd conclude would be nearly an equivalent and is common parlance in the field, AFAIK. Corrections welcomed.

Best, Ray
