Good idea but there's one problem with that - upgrading server software doesn't occur in a vacuum. Remember, these servers are not just running websites, but databases, email servers and perhaps other applications (custom apps/directory services/printing). Upgrading one piece of code could "break" other pieces of software and I've seen patches from vendors that break their own systems! Also testing the fix against all possible scenarios is not technically feasible for any vendor IMO.

Larger corporate networks have "testing labs/systems" where upgrades, fixes/patches and re-configurations are first tried out. After passing muster there, they move into production. As an engineer in charge of managing servers and services that affect 10,000+ users, I wouldn't want my job hanging on some automatic patch system that not only does its work on its own, whenever a vendor decides to change something but doesn't even notify me of the changes.

[Hey, can vendors push software out to us without us knowing then charge us for it?]

I'd rather spend the extra few hours keeping informed, testing, checking newsgroups, testing some more then deploying into production. If I can't communicate this to my direct supervisor and/or the next level up and get their support, I'm not working for a company that takes this stuff seriously enough. I should be polishing up my resume and looking elsewhere because most likely I'll be a scapegoat later.....
