Paul:
I think it is true that people are looking to some degree at
performance but not 100%. I remember when I bought my old PB about
3 years ago. The old 486/sx33 I mentioned earlier. My son told me
afew weeks later that it couldnt be enjoyed to its fullest extent
because it had no Soundboard. A few weeks later I got one and to
this day cant figure out how I ever got by without it.Last year I
wanted to play the game "Mech Warrior 2" and my generic 1meg
Video Trident card wouldntcut it . I ended up getting a 2 Meg
Diamond Stealth 64 bit. Long before that I had purchased a 4X
CD ROM but it wasnt the most expensive.

I think what you have now is people buying at least enough in
Multimedia Accessories for the Encyclopedias, games etc that are
now available. Not necessarily the best in Performance but at least
good enough in performance and all the necessary adjuncts to handle
what they need and if the adults dont know then the salespeople and
the kids are there to suggest/advise.I also find that as a general
rule the salespeople seem to be more knowledgeable whether from
experience or only being hired if they are. I can remember going
into a COMP USA when they first opened here and i know a fair
amount as I was an Electronics Tech in the Navy. Whenever I asked
a question everbody always had to go and consult this one salesmen to
answer my question and those from other people. I go to EB, BABBAGE
COMP USA etc today and there doesnt seem to be that much of a
problem.

Therefore I think the "savings" is going to purchase more
machine and if the salespeople cant get them to buy the more
expensive "Basic" machine with High performance then they are
willing to sell the "Adequate" machine with more add-ons.When I took
my Hard-drive in last week to get it replaced as it was under
Warranty being only 4 months old I had 8 more megs of Ram put in as
I just cant imagine 8 Megs of Ram costing $79.00 for very much
longer but then who knows?
