Intersil Saves InfiniBand Module Manufacturers Board Space, Design Costs And Time To Market IRVINE, CA--(INTERNET WIRE)--Sep 24, 2001-- Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL - news), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, today announced the Endura ISL6160, the world's first single integrated circuit (IC) hot swap controller designed specifically for InfiniBand communications modules. InfiniBand is a new gigabit-range communications specification for midrange and high-end servers and data storage networks and is backed by an industry association of over 200 members. The ISL6160 is part of Intersil's complete power solution reference design that saves InfiniBand module manufacturers board space, design costs and time to market. The ISL6160 precisely controls the flow of power to the InfiniBand communications module by providing protection from damaging surges and allowing safe replacement of an InfiniBand module (hot swap) without shutting the server or system down. Intersil's turnkey InfiniBand power solution combines the ISL6160 with the HIP6006 Pulse Width Modulation DC-DC controller in a reference design and evaluation platform (ISL6160EVAL2) that is backed by Intersil's engineering and industry experience.
"InfiniBand eliminates the traffic jams that slow down data transfers between and within servers, storage arrays, and other systems that form the core of corporate networks and the Internet. To help enable this exciting new technology, Intersil now offers the world's most complete and cost-effective power solution for InfiniBand module manufacturers," said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil's Analog Business Unit. "As members of the InfiniBand Trade Association, our engineers have worked concurrently with specification development to design the ISL6160 and the total power control solution needed to ensure reliable, uninterrupted service in these server systems."
Endura ISL6160 Technical Description
The ISL6160 is the world's first single IC InfiniBand hot swap power control solution providing manufacturers with savings in board space, parts costs and design costs. It is designed to address the unique hot swap power requirements of the InfiniBand industry initiative. The ISL6160 provides independent power control and soft starting ramps of both the VB (bulk, +12V) and the VA (auxiliary, +5V) power rails required for every InfiniBand module. It can be configured for Class I or Class II, non-isolated and isolated, topologies. It also provides accurate and consistent current regulated outputs for a determined period of time before latch-off in the presence of over-current conditions. Upon module insertion to chassis or from a wake event request, the ISL6160 supplies an enable signal to activate the on-module DC-DC converter. There is no other InfiniBand hot swap solution as compact and cost-effective.
