There is nothing particularly heroic about letting someone else kill some convict strapped to a chair in a prison.

What is a hard decision, and a courageous decision, is to decide to let yourself be sent to Vietnam when you know that your Senator/Father could have pulled strings and gotten you safe stateside duty.

Gore stood up for his country and went to war - when he could have weaseled himself out of it, as so many others did. For God's sake, give the guy some credit, if for nothing else then for the sake of those others who may be doing the same thing as we sit here in our cozy homes.
