<I THOUGHT Tieneman square was a peaceful gathering. >

Freeus, not entirely and the intent was not peaceful. It was intended to overthrow the government and take power in a repeat of the USSR overthrow which lead to a decade of mess, poverty and reduction in life expectancy.

China has forged ahead into a successful country by comparison. Yes, I know it's not perfect and I ranted at the time about how the 50th celebrations reminded me of nothing so much as the Nazi Nuremberg rally [though in colour rather than black and white]. Jiang Zemin looked silly standing up in his black limo, reviewing the troops. Shouting "Sieg" to which the crowd roared back "Heil" [or whatever the detailed translation was but it meant about the same = "hail to the chief and the state is all and the individual serves the state"].

But it's better to achieve freedom carefully. As you know, the USA is not totally free and neither is NZ although being democracies. Democracy is not all it's cracked up to be and freedom in practise is only an improvement rather than something absolute.

There were quite a few police attacked and killed by the peaceful protestors.

So I'm not an apologist for repression. But neither do I fawn over any mindless mob which gets hot under the collar.

Jay no doubt has a better insight than I do and I suspect I will be informed on what the truth is if I am far off beam.
