Jim and all, I just caught Dateline tonight, and only now am I beginning to fathom the cold and calculated demeanor in which the hijackers carried out their plans. In short, they came to this country with pure murder on their minds. Every American citizen they interacted with, from hotel clerks to flight school teachers to travel agents, must have appeared to them as potential sheep to the slaughter.

Plus the inside report of a few daring journalists in Afghanistan was also very revealing to me. The Taliban is indeed one of the most brutal fundamentalist regimes on this planet. I think it is reasonable to say that the Taliban believes exactly the opposite of what the average American believes in. And I also believe that although the Taliban might not have directly ordered the attacks, they would give their tacit approval if they didn't fear retribution.

Yes, I know Dateline has a habit of sensationalism. But I have no reason to believe that they needed to embellish this story. It goes right along with what Christian missionaries at my church have reported firsthand, if not about the Taliban directly, then about the pattern of oppressive fundamentalism in the Middle East.
