Taliban ask US people to help avert war

myafghan.com

KABUL, Sept 24: Afghanistan's ruling Taliban on Monday appealed to the people of the United States to put pressure on the government in Washington to avert war between the two countries.

A statement issued by the foreign ministry of the Islamic militia, said Afghanistan deeply appreciated the aid it received from the United States during its resistance to the 1979-89 Soviet occupation.

" The help and assistance of the American people during jihad (against the USSR) was appreciated," the statement said. " But unfortunately the US government has been threatening the people and territory of Afghanistan for some unknown reasons and different pretexts.

"It has even sometimes talked of a crusade against the religion of this country, which is very horrible," the statement said.

"We ask you to draw the attention of your leaders to the unfortunate consequences of such violations," the statement said. "By avoiding such violations the people of both countries could be saved from the unfortunate consequence of war."-AFP
