Hi Gary, If people hadn't been fooled into paying 5 to 10 times more for stocks than they were inherently worth, then you wouldn't see many people shorting.

Blame the people who pumped the Internet Bubble (hint: Look for investment banks and IPO underwriters), not the shorters. These interest groups with the help of their "analysts" and the media grossly misrepresented their "products".

This crash occurred for only one reason: Stock prices were waaaaaay too high !
