The post that raised the subject mentioned the ability to detain suspicious for an indefinite period of time.

I am no expert on Constitutional Law, but that would seem to me to be treading pretty close to the edge. I don't imagine you'd have wanted to give Janet Reno carte blanche to pick up and indefinitely detain anyone she thought suspicious. I wouldn't have wanted that either; I am no more comfortable with the idea of giving that power to the current Justice Department. If exceptional powers must be given, let them be given, but the limits and duration must be clearly defined.
