The consumer confidence index dropped to 97.6 in September from 114.0 in August, well below expectations for a reading of 105.0 and the lowest since January 1996. "While survey results conducted before and after the terrorist attacks on September 11 differed slightly, there was no reversal in the downward trend of the Index," the Conference Board said. The expectations component plunged to 79.2 in September from 93.7, marking the largest monthly drop in the subindex since October 1990's 23 point drop. The present situation index also dropped sharply, falling to 125.2 from 144.5, the lowest reading since October 1996. The percentage of respondents claiming jobs were hard to get rose to 18.5% in September from 16.0%, suggesting a weak payroll report next Friday. The consensus currently calls for a 100,000 decline in September nonfarm payrolls.
