Haim, i believe gold refined to high purity is the same regardless of provenance. i was going to add the same thing that Don already mentioned in his reply...you can cut it into small pieces, to give change. and one small piece of x weight and purity is interchangeable with any other piece of same weight and purity.
you are of course correct that in the final analysis there is something arbitrary about it...but nevertheless, there are good reasons why gold has emerged as the primary monetary metal.
