re: I think nothing less than the elimination of the Taliban will do. These attacks are the fruit of their extremist fundamentalism.
There was a pretty good article in today's WSJ that listed the top 10 terrorist organizations, their strength, base of operation, and external aid. Only bin Laden's Al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan.
What I'm trying to get across is that the problem goes beyond the Taliban, they are a small portion of the overall terrorist problem.
If our actions were to create an atmosphere where Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Jordan, or a combination of those friendly governments were to fall to fundamental Islamic factions, then the consequences could be, well, interesting, for a long, long time. Imagine if the whole region had the same attitude as the Taliban.
There could be a lot more at stake than some people realize.
Speculation on my part. I hope that my fears are exaggerated.
