Jim, if Big Oil does exert a fair amount of control, then one conclusion is that investing in Big Oil (e.g., XOM, RD, BP) is likely to give a better long term result than investing in smaller companies. Maybe over a 20 year time horizon, one could reach this conclusion, but even though I like long term investing, I'm not ready to go that long term. I follow XOM rather closely, but don't see any reason why it would be preferable to many other large oil firms, or many smaller ones.

As for manipulating prices through hiding inventory and other tactics, I think many people in and outside of the investment community realize this but discount it at least in share prices.
