There are three major problems with the conservatives' stance on school vouchers:

(1) American people don't want vouchers. Voters in Michigan and California said "no" to vouchers on Nov. 8, 2000, by 70-30 margins. American people want their public schools revitalized.

(2) Be careful of what you wish for. Technically, the Taliban itself could start "religious" schools and receive government funds to teach children how to hijack planes.

(3) Few private schools actually would end up accepting voucher students. The schools are private for a reason. In Florida, where there has been a voucher program in place for a few years, only 6 percent of private schools accept voucher students.

I suspect that when the Supremes do rule on the Ohio law, the opinion will be very narrowly focused.
