The people in our country have it so well.

The luxuries of our prosperity.. I cannot emphasize this to much, as we try to keep things in perspective. We have it so great in this country. In terms of our basic human condition, the circumstances that we all live in compared to most of the people in this world. Europe's middleclass are poorer than our so-called poor in this country.

We have the luxury to sit around and debate such nebulous things like missile defense, to sit around and debate global warming.. These are things that pose nowhere near the threat that we now are facing or have been forced to face. Or the kind of threat that people around the world have been forced to face everyday. Have you seen the pictures of the places where these terrorists are training and living? These are places people like me and you wouldn't be caught dead in.

These peoples objective everyday is survival.

Our objective everyday is to find a cologne that matches our body chemistry so that it doesn't offend anybody.

These people around the world are struggling to stay alive everyday. They're trying to find food that is edible. They are trying to find medicine when they're sick. They are trying to stave off totalitarian governments that murder just for the fun of it.

We on the other hand have the freedom and luxury to sit around and debate whether or not the temperature of the earth is going up 1 degree centigrade in the next hundred years and what it might mean for the coast line in North Carolina.

Now I know everything is relative and that's important to us. But compared to other people it's irrelevant. And it would be irrelevant to you too if our daily existence was our objective. But staying alive is not our existence, it's not our objective, it's not our challenge.

We have the best health care system in the world. (even though there are some in this country that would try to tear it down) We just have it different and this is why people like me celebrate it everyday.. I want the people of the world to understand the possibilities for them as human beings. They can have the opportunities that we have.. That we take for granted. They can't do it with the oppressive regimes they have been forced to live under. They can't do it under the threat of disease and the threat of starvation.

Because they don't even have time to dream TLC. They don't even have time to dream and dreams are what motivate, animate, inspire people. Dreams often times provide the most creativity that people have. Realizing one's dreams is the goal of all Americans.. But if you don't have time to dream and that dreaming things is so unrealistic that it's a waste of time what must your life be like?

That's why I cringe when I hear people like Phil Donahue on his own television show lamenting the accident of his birth. He was suggesting that if he had been born a couple 100 miles south of where he was. LA.. How different his life would have been and his solution to it was to feel guilty about all the things he had because he was an American. And to find a spirit of commonality with the deprived.

I on the other hand look at it just the opposite way. I don't feel guilty about what I have. I don't feel fortunate that I was born here. What I try to do is look at my life to see why I am prosperous and try to teach others and spread it around. These other people on earth can learn to live this way too.

That's what the promise of America has always been.

We don't conquer, we liberate.

We have a way of life, granted it has some flaws. But we can spread these flaws to the least of our abilities and spread our good to the most.
