I never bought the parents don't value education bit. I was taught in a very poor neighborhood by Nuns. Many of the kids came from broken homes and about 1/2 of the kids came from the orpanage across the street.

The combination of discipline, caring and hard work that the nuns lavished on us was why the school was successful.

When I went into public school the difference was immediately apparant. Teachers did not impose discipline, often did not assign or check homework and frankly demanded very little.

That was in the early sixties. Things are much worse now. Most of the kids can't make change, read or spell today, including those from the so called better public schools.

The system has broken down and the people who benefit from the broken down system are never going to fix it.
