Less than 10% of Americans are WASPs. In the 1990 census (I haven't seen that level of detail for the 2000 census) Around 30million people claimed English ancestry. Now many people claimed ancestry from more than one group and some English were Catholics. The biggest ethnic origin claimed was German at around 60 million. Germans certainly aren't Anglo-Saxons (though some may be Saxons :) ) and half of them are Catholic. WASPS have been over-represented in the elite (though several recent Presidents were Irish instead) but are not very representative of the American people.
