I think WASPs historically were in the elite due to the way the country was founded. The original settlers in New England were WASPs. They got here first, and set up the power structure to suit themselves. There were a lot of German and Dutch immigrants, too - also white, mostly Protestant, and if not Anglo-Saxon, closely related. The Hispanics settled further south and west, and the French settled in Louisiana and Canada - but the ties between England the "thirteen original colonies" - what became the early United States - were closer. The close ties between England and the US did not end with the Revolution. It did not hurt at all to be closely allied to the British Empire, even if we were no longer part of it. If China becomes the next Empire, we won't think it's strange if Hakka all over the world are part of the elite.
