I believe Air Marshals utilize special ammunition.
I believe pilots would be issued special ammunition as well.

I believe you are correct that traditional bullets would be dangerous. The purpose of the special ammunition is to
prevent the failures you were discussing with a pressurized airplane. I believe Air Marshals currently carry firearms.

Here again, I am not an expert just passing on the guts of my brother's email.
