This whole terrorist crisis, somehow, boils down to a devious scheme by the Russians to drag the US military into Central Asia --let's dub it Operation Rent-a-Bulwark... against Islam, that is. washingtonpost.com Indeed, Russia just doesn't have the military capacity anymore to contain Muslim activism in the region (see Chechnya) and doesn't want the Chinese to tackle the issue in a couple of years when their military will be up to the task and their oil needs (Caspian Sea) will justify a more forceful Chinese engagement... Putin's gambit is to bring in the Yanks as an interim second-best. In case the US becomes too much of a nuisance in Russia's historical backyard then anti-US elements could always be whipped up --eventually, the Vietnam factor will do the rest and hasten the US's withdrawal...
