BEA Systems Secures 15-Point Lead in Market Share Over Competition in Deployed Application Servers as Confirmed by META Group Survey
BEA Holds #1 Market Share in Deployed J2EE Application Servers And Nearly 4-to-1 Lead in EJB Application Deployments
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep 26, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS chart, msgs), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced that research conducted by leading industry analyst firm META Group shows that BEA holds 37% of the market for deployed Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application servers, a figure that is almost 70% higher than its closest competitor. These results come from a META Group survey of over 200 IT decision-makers, focused specifically on managers and executives responsible for selecting and deploying J2EE applications servers.
The META Group survey was designed to determine which J2EE application servers are actually being used for deployed e-business applications. Separately, the research also looked specifically at the use of J2EE application servers for applications using Enterprise JavaBeans. Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) deployments are important because they are typically used for complex, business-critical applications, providing the essential infrastructure for the business logic, transaction management and database access essential to large-scale enterprise applications. The META Group survey revealed the following market share results for the two leading vendors:

Market share by vendor for deployed J2EE application servers:

BEA - 37%
IBM - 22%

Market share by vendor for deployed applications leveraging EJBs:

BEA - 52%
IBM - 14%

"Many studies have attempted to measure application server market share using license revenue estimates and service revenue allocations, often providing an incomplete picture of the market," said Tod Nielsen, senior vice-president, corporate product marketing and developer services for BEA. "By going to the heart of the issue -- identifying which application server is actually being deployed for mission-critical applications -- META Group's findings show that the market is putting its trust in BEA. This third-party research validates what we are already hearing from our 11,000 customers, including the majority of the Fortune Global 500, and 2,100 partners: BEA is the preferred choice for enterprise ebusiness infrastructure."

"As the application server market continues its consolidation around a select group of vendors, META Group sees customers favoring an e-business platform that provides a foundation for alleviating today's major pain points, while creating opportunities for growth and flexibility as needs change over time," said Thomas Murphy, program director, Application Delivery Strategies for META Group. "We believe application server functionality will rapidly extend beyond this platform to impact the entire e-business environment, as vendors attempt to differentiate themselves with enhanced capabilities and functionality."

Survey Methodology

META Group Consulting surveyed Fortune 2000 -- class enterprises, speaking directly to the IT decision-makers selecting application server solutions. Research was conducted through telephone interviews with mid and upper-level IT management and executives. Of those companies surveyed, 53% conduct virtually all business within the United States; 41% are U.S.-based multi-national companies; and the remaining 6% are U.S. divisions or subsidiaries with headquarters outside of the U.S.
