TM, I have a tendency to mostly like upbeat stuff and to turn off on ballads. What I have noticed is all the groups and individuals who make their name with upbeat stuff and then turn to sappy ballads later on. Bruce Springsteen comes to mind right away. Bob Dylan was pulling that crap for a long time, too. And Counting Crows have to get back to "Mr. Jones" type stuff.
