Even trained police officers, in the line of duty, have their guns taken from them on occasion. Imagine a pilot trying to land a jet in a storm and keep track of his gun. Or look at it another way, why would anybody want to fly when your protection is the pilot winning a shootout with a terrorist? Maybe you get shot in the crossfire, or get sucked out the bullet hole in the fuselage. Sounds like a typical American response, though -- more guns! Nothing wimpy like a reinforced titanium door that makes it virtually impossible for a terrorist to take control of the craft (assuming they don't just give him a seat in the flight deck...).
