Fyo, Re: "But a better question would be, why would Micron be interested in buying AMD? I'm only interested from the basis of whether there is any potential motives for such a rumor. Fabs, process technology, cash on hand, process-related IP… "
I agree that Micron can always use the fabs, and the process IP would be nice, but I don't agree with the other things.
AMD does not have a lot of cash on hand, and this quarter, it seems likely that they have increased their debt. Also, Micron has their own process technology that is used for making DRAM. CPU process technologies wouldn't be instantly portable. Finally, when has acquiring a company not been a liability, at least in the beginning? Micron just posted huge losses this past quarter, and AMD isn't planning on doing much better. It would take management perfection to bring both companies back running and making money under the current market conditions, and I don't think Micron or AMD has that kind of management.
