Give America some credit! When a society is closed to some of its members due to race, religion or whatever as most countries in Asia and many in Europe are, then it is natural for the discriminated not to bond as much as others. The more refusal to treat a minority as equal under whatever pretext, the more chances that your fears will come true. And your reference to American Japanese and Philippine's illustrates just that point.

Another example is a late night PBS program I saw last night on the American Jews in general and New York City Jews in particular. The history clearly illustrated that the NYC Jews fought for the previllage to perform guard duty in "New Amsterdam" and for the right to equal treatment. When they eventually won that war, the challenge was no longer how to become American; it was how maintain their identity while remaining American.

There is a lot that the world can learn from American history. Sadly many Americans forget the lessons of their own society was built. There is no reason to change what has worked so well for so long.
