re: "Federated identity." "Open, Federated Solution for Network Identity ..."

[FAC: ... what does it all mean? Might any such network identiy code possibly also include a jpeg of the individual's personal photo, voice prints and fingerprints that would be sent along with each message in the packet header of the "... common network identity protocols combined with common network protocols ..."? <I originally had a grin emoticon { _g_ } within these brackets, but removed it after giving it some more thought.> ]

BUSINESS WIRE

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 — Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE:GX)

-----

Global Crossing partners with industry leaders to bring increasing levels of efficiency, security and interoperability to global enterprises.

Common network identity protocols combined with common network protocols will greatly enhance the value of communities of interest and industry extranets.

Global Crossing to participate in the development of specific applications for financial services, media & entertainment, government, and other industry categories.

Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE:GX) today announced that it has joined the Liberty Alliance Project (www.projectliberty.org) as a founding member, working with other major industry leaders to create an open, federated, single sign-on solution for network identity.

"Joining this historic alliance gives us the opportunity to participate in the redefinition of how online identities will be established, managed and optimized in the future," said David Walsh, President, Global Crossing. "Particularly as Global Crossing continues to build out not just network services but enable entire communities of interest, the development of common protocols for managing the people and information within those communities is extremely powerful. Beyond industry extranets, we also see tremendous opportunities to inter-connect industries, which is only possible when common standards like IP and now network identity solutions like this are made available."

Identity refers to the basic information, whether of a consumer, an employee, a business, a supplier, even a machine or device, which is stored and accessed digitally. This might include name, address, phone numbers, email, pagers, licenses, accreditation, applications, associations, and more.

As provider of the world's most extensive IP network running over a fiber optic backbone, Global Crossing's participation in the Liberty Alliance Project is in line with its focus on delivering fully managed, end-to-end solutions for global enterprises in an open, standards-based environment. Supporting an open, federated system will provide single sign-on for Global Crossing's customer base into both its own and other Liberty-based identity solutions. At the same time the solution guarantees privacy and security of data, letting the user maintain control over which organization has access to which level of personal information.
