Nokia's participation in the network identity initiative underlines the need for an open industry specification for seamless communications and transactions on the mobile internet

Nokia today announced that it will co-found the Liberty Alliance Project (www.projectliberty.org) together with other major industry leaders to create an open, standards-based solution for network identity and authentication to provide single sign-on to the internet and to the mobile internet.

"The way in which people communicate with each other is moving to a new level. Personalization, location specific services and time sensitivity are becoming increasingly important as individuals are building their own mobile worlds. The mobile phone will evolve into a centerpiece of personal life management, enabling complete personal connectivity between people, services, devices and applications," says Mikko Terho, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Internet Technical Architecture.

"We can enable a new generation of secure and flexible mobile internet services through initiatives such as the 'Liberty Alliance'. In addition, the objectives of the alliance are in line with the goals of the Nokia Mobile Internet Technical Architecture, which focuses on providing seamless interoperability between all interaction modes, any network environment and with any type of access," Mr. Terho continues.

The Liberty Alliance supports a system which provides a single sign-on enabling a decentralized approach to garnering personal or proprietary information, and promotes interoperability across networks. At the same time, the solution guarantees privacy and security of data, letting the user maintain control over which organization has access to varying levels of personal information.

Identity refers to the basic information needed to identify a consumer, an employee, a business, a supplier, even a machine or device, when using the internet and mobile internet services. In points of service identity leads to service data, which may include name, address, phone numbers, work and home email, credit cards, club memberships, social security number, health records, banking records or part numbers.

Any organization interested in supporting the Liberty Alliance Project can visit www.projectliberty.org for details. The Liberty Alliance Project plans to begin immediately in setting out a roadmap to address business practices, privacy, consumer adoption and technology evolution.
