We now have military and political objectives in Afghanistan. To achieve those objectives we need the cooperation of the government of Pakistan. The Pakistan government is headed by a general who took over in a military coup. To gain the governments cooperation, we provide financial and other incentives - a trade for cooperation. I am sure there are friends in Pakistan who decry this new "support" for their unelected government.

We deal with informers, drug dealers, unsavory characters, etc., to achieve our political and military objectives. Why do we interpret this as "support" for them? In the same way we deal with the governments of Pakistan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, etc., to accomplish our objectives. Pragmatism.

What should we do - be pragmatic OR refuse to deal with those governments at the expense of not realizing our objectives OR implement a policy of overthrowing all governments that don't meet our requirements?
