long-gone, I would say some degree of spread is always important providing one attempts to spread risk and opportunity and not simply diversify for its own sake.

Anglogold is the best goldmining investment available in SA. That's why it's my largest holding. By best, I mean it pays the highest dividends, has a good geographic spread (minimizing the SA risk) and most operations are relatively low cost. I also have some Harmony, Goldfields and Avgold but none of these are particularly serious holdings.
