Following in the wake of similar comments from the state-run Technical Advisory Group as well as from other phone manufacturers, Nokia's announcement casts a shadow on the fate of GBP22.5bn invested in 3G licenses by telecoms firms last year. "It's interesting to hear one of the major companies, which is hoping to benefit from 3G, make these admissions. There aren't that many applications which we expect to become popular with consumers that need 3G," said tech investment bank Soundview's vice president for research, Peter Richardson.
