I absolutely hope and expect that our government will lie to us. In a global information age, that is the only way to succeed in a military/intelligence operation.

I think the only reason NOT to invade and completely take over Afghanistan is the terrain. We could take it over easily enough, but controlling the people and getting them to install a fair and democratic system without any traditions to guide them would be impossible. The best approach may be to sweep out all of the scoundrels, and then airlift plane after plane after plane of food and supplies in there, and give out the food in education camps where people are taught to read, write and think for themselves. When is the last time a country with a high literacy rate did something like this?

The only answer that comes quickly to mind is Germany, but the world has changed since then.
