Hi Dave, it's been awhile since I was a practicing CPA, but if I remember correctly LT investments also must be marked to market after precipitous declines, when the probability is high that those investments will not recover within several years. Those rules have changed quite a bit in the last 10 years too. I've been seeing within the accounting industry an increasing desire to move away from cost basis accounting towards market based accounting. Obviously, the thing they always weigh is how much added burden this will add to the cost of record keeping for companies. Any other CPAs on the thread? Anyone know the definitive answer off the top of their heads, so we don't have to go back to our accounting books?
