Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria are predominantly Catholic too. Northern Italy is one of the richest parts of Europe also. I don't think there is really a strong correlation on Catholic vs Protestant holding other things constant. Modern capitalism and the industrial revolution got started in Protestant countries but transmission since then didn't necessarily favor the Protestant countries first. Both France and Sweden were relatively poor at the beginning of the 20th century compared to England and Germany/Netherlands.
