Ericsson gets $150 mln Voicestream GSM, EDGE deal

Thursday September 27, 11:54 am Eastern Time

STOCKHOLM, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Thursday it received a contract from Voicestream, the U.S. unit of Deutsche Telekom , to expand its nationwide GSM network.

It will also supply Voicestream with higher speed EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) infrastructure, which allows an operator to offer multimedia services over the existing specturm, in certain markets.

``The agreement, initially valued at $150 million, could exceed $300 million over a three-year period,'' Ericsson said in a statement.

Ericsson said it would also give Voicestream mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) capabilities, location-based services and mobile gaming and entertainment applications.
