But we cannot make up for the "crime" in a spectacular way E. The region would not greet a puppet US government with joy. If we went in there and destroyed the Taliban and put in our own "compassionate" government (we've never been able to do that before and I doubt we'd be able to do it now)- we could very well destabilize a bunch of other moderate Arab powers in the vicinity and then we'd have 5 more countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, or more.

It might sound good, But it doesn't seem workable. We need a long range policy in the region aimed less at international hegemony and anti -communism and more at trying to promote moderates. Which we really have never tried. This mess didn't occur overnight, and it won't be solved overnight. I can't imagine you think sweeping out Afghanistan would be a good idea. But maybe you do. That's something I never would have predicted.
