I have a question regarding the news release below. At one point it refers to a person who is being held as an illegal immigrant.

Recalling the Mariel (sp?) boatlift and all the Cubans that Castro sent us - most of those people were put in a camp and as far as I know, are still being kept there. And why didn't we pack them up and send them home. Most of them were criminals in Cuba.

What is the status of an illegal immigrant? Can they be held indefinitely? Do our laws apply equally to them? I'm just unfamiliar with how we treat illegals except for deporting them as soon as possible. But what if we want to keep them?
