Chem, as we fawning students called him, is a bright fellow, one of the best at my old law school. Very glad to see him doing something more than commenting on O.J., or the 2000 election.

The fervent rush to "protect" ourselves by reducing our own personal freedoms with this or that new surveillance/security measure troubles me more than 50,000 terrorists with "bombs to go" strapped on their guts. We can easily take care of that enemy...I fear what we will do to ourselves via new laws.

I would disagree with Chem about the "roving" taps...technoogy has moved on, the notion of "Bugsy" having one rotary phone at his secret lair is outdated. Going to a magistrate/circuit judge to get a modified warrant is a lot tougher than a suspect's ability to quickly drop one disposable communication device for another. Official taps must be allowed to "stick" on a specific individual. I won't go any further into what wiretapping really means in terms of actual use by law enforcement, just talking about the stuff they can bring into evidence.

This a great resource of info this thread. Kudos to all those contributing to its excellence. Yours truly excluded!

Good luck all,
midnite
