... the taxi meter kept ticking away the minutes, running up a huge tab. If Precious had been awake, she would have announced each and every tick. Of course, she would calculate how much the tab is, and how much it would be at the next tick. Fortunately for the cab driver, she was sound asleep so he didn't have to listen to her constant mindless jabbering.
The cab driver looked at his Mickey Mouse watch.
The big hand was on the the 5. And so was the little hand.
It was 5:05AM.
"A palindrome!", muttered the cab driver under his breath, so he wouldn't awake his passengers.
Silently, he got out of the cab, closed the door, and walked across the street to the 24-hour Chinese restaurant and Arcade. "I just LOVE sweet and sour pork early in the morning", he thought.
Before he entered the restaurant, he looked back over his shoulder at the people in his cab. The meter kept on ticking, and all four of the passengers kept on sleeping.
"They'll be safe there for an hour or so", he thought.
He entered the restaurant and disappeared from view, right before the city garbage truck turned the corner at the end of the street. |
