They were thieves and kidnappers. Definitely not the same thing as modern-day terrorists.

But I just wanted to make the point that America and the Arabs have not always been friends. The Barbary Pirate episode was a formative experience for our nation. It directly influenced us to form a permanent navy and start to intervene in international affairs.
