ECS being sued with VIA in Intel's UK case digitimes.com Penny Wang, Research Center and Samson Yu, Taipei; Christy Lee, DigiTimes.com [Friday 28 September 2001] Court battles between Intel and Taiwan-based VIA Technologies further heightened as Intel filed a series of patent infringement suits on September 27 in Germany, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. In the UK case, Taiwanese motherboard maker Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), the first company to mass-produce motherboards based on VIA's P4X266, is also listed as one of the defendants. ECS senior vice president Chen Ming-tsun said that the company should not be greatly affected by the lawsuit, since VIA had already promised to cover any losses ECS might incur from any legal disputes before the company began volume production of P4X266-based motherboards. Chen indicated that ECS's primary clients are distributors, which usually have higher price/performance requirements. Given that ECS's P4X266 boards are US$15-16 cheaper than its 845-based motherboards, the company's clients did not necessarily favor using Intel's chipsets.
