And all along I thought trolls were like everyone else but smaller???

That sounds like dwarves or gnomes to me. Trolls were hairy ugly creatures living under bridges that attacked passers by I thought. Moomintrolls were invented by Tove Jansson in her children's books (from 1940s to 1960s). They are not very hairy and don't attack people and live in houses. They are small. Moomins are very popular in some countries but not in the US.
