See Tom Friedman op ed NYTimes today. Friedman is welcome in all Arab countries and has often taken positions opposite of Israel as well as US policy toward Israel. He has a brilliant article today on accomplishing first things first before getting on with economic development etc. HIs insight is that the alliance with Russia and Putin and Putin's access to the Russian and Afghan mafia will be an essential tool in hunting down bin laden et al. Friedman goes on to say that to these guys bringing him in dead or alive means bringing him in dead.
Now from me. I have thought long and hard about the cheering in some countries the day of the attack. I understand it now as frustration without the malice toward the individuals who died. As these folks have watched americans unite and behave bravely in the aftermath, a new respect for america has/will returned. Doing what we say and taking out the terrorists without indiscriminate use of force will complete this and not inflame them. Bombing from the air on civilians and a no casualty approach is viewed as cowardly and I agree.
However they also realize that a world without america is a hopeless world where fundamentalism and abject poverty will reign supreme. No sane person wants this. A return to the middle ages is universally recognized as a bad thing. Folks will die in our effort. Throats will be cut in the middle of the night. I will not lose sleep over that if it secures a better life for our(the worlds) children.
And to Brian I promise full support for that Marshall plan. You wont hear me talking to much about tax cuts. You will hear more about universal service and peace corps. And Jerome, none of these views comes from the talmud. It comes from a view of liberty and freedom and social conciousness that comes from being an american. mike
