Ray, I think you could have safely left off the qualifier. By the time this conflict is over, 3g will be a (sad) footnote in business case studies. Paying huge $ for spectrum when there is no established market or applications - hmmmmm, what's wrong with dat picture?! They can't even stream video on these networks!

Who wants to spend more than a few minutes a day on a phone "computing"? Even if they can find applications people actually want, nobody will pay what they need to charge to break even. Can they get porn ($$$) on those small screens? :^>

BTW On the topic of having friends in bureaucracy, the FCC just added a mobility allocation to the MMDS bands without relocating existing licensees. Of course, Worldcom and Sprint deny any intention to add mobility but they may be interested in portability within a given MMDS "cell".
