As long as men clothe themselves, even in warm weather, or create rituals around their mating, including seeking privacy for coitus, or set aside special places to relieve themselves, rather than evacuating anywhere, they are distinguishing themselves, however imperfectly, from animals.
Holy people are means of keeping the sacred alive in societies often beset with everyday cares. They exalt us by helping to keep a channel open to eternity, and thus help us to rise above the quotidian.
