NEC , Hitachi to delay DRAM JV start
TOKYO, Sept 28 (Reuters) - NEC Corp and Hitachi Ltd, Japan's second- and third-largest chipmakers, said on Friday they would delay the installation of production equipment at their memory chip joint venture to September 2002 from December 2001.

Elpida Memory Inc was set up in December 1999 as a 50-50 venture by the two firms to market and manufacture dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips using cutting-edge cost-saving technology.

``In addition to the current unprecedented deterioration in the DRAM market, the outlook for the market has become uncertain due to the terror incident in the United States, so we decided to delay the installation of production equipment until September 2002 from December 2001,'' the companies said in a joint statement.

Production is now scheduled to start in October of next year, one month after the installation of equipment, a spokesman said. Production had originally been due to start early next year.
