Puck,

<< my remarks about eating crow. >>

We all have to eat a little crow from time to time. <g>

I ate a lot in Y2K as a result of my dialogue with Tero on the Nokia thread.

To Tero's credit, he never pointed out that I had crow for my lunch entree as the comparative sub numbers came out quarter to quarter (with no sign of the trend reversal I predicted) or when the Anatel decision was announced (after I confidently predicted that their was NO WAY brazil would license 1800 MHz spectrum).

Respectfully, I'd like to comment additionally on this in the spirit of the good and welfare of this promising thread.

First, let me commend you for creating a thread for the "respectful discussion of Nokia in particular" AND (most importantly) "other companies in the wireless sector more generally, including both infrastructure and services".

It was very needed and I much appreciate it.

The original and venerable Nokia thread has somewhat deteriorated over the last 21 months or so. I won't even bother to add an "IMO" to that.

Once it was a place where one could discuss a fine European headquartered worldwide company that has prospered enormously since the thread was originally founded by Nils about a year after the NYSE Nokia listing.

I was a lurker back then. I had not yet joined SI and consequently did not have posting privileges and even when I joined SI in 1997, I declined to post wireless threads, opting to stay in lurk mode, because I was actively involved in the wireless industry and my company was under NDA with most of the major wireless carriers in North America (and elsewhere).

Eventually the long time Qualcommers wandered in and some heated but very informative debates ensued, many of them between the original articulate and wireless knowledgeable Nokia thread anchor (Tero Kuittinen) and passionate but dedicated and equally knowledgeable Qualcommers.

The Nokia thread was a fine learning place, a fun place, and for the most part, thread participants demonstrated respect for each other regardless of their technology preference.

The Nokia thread (like the Ericsson thread) was also a place where you could gain insight into technologies other than CDMA which naturally was the bias of the fine Qualcomm "Coming of Range" thread and those that evolved from it.

That of course changed. Company bashing, and people bashing became commonplace on the Nokia thread. I guess I am not the only with an Evil Twin.

I think it important to pint out that our threadmate Slacker is, IMO, one of the great contributors to the wireless threads and carranza2 is articulate, fun, and very wireless observant.

You're the moderator here.

That is a somewhat thankless task.

It is a task that I would not relish.

Thanks for founding the thread and taking on the role.

I do think, however, that we should all leave our Evil Twin at home when posting to this thread because it holds the potential to be a fine place to advance our learning and communicate with others who have the same objective.

All of our Evil Twin's can duke it out "over there".

Personally, I am hopeful, that this thread can attract more participants than we have today, all dedicated to discussing Nokia and Wireless in a respectful fashion, while at the same time intelligently presenting their point of view (which may differ from yours or mine).

I'm hoping we can avoid the "your mother wears combat boots" syndrome over here and I don't think it is proper to gloat over others having to eat crow, although their is certainly nothing wrong with linking to a prior post and saying to our threadmate(s), "hey, do you remember when you said ... well, guess what ...". That type of statement, however, generally legitimately deserves one of those grinnie little emoticon thingies. <g>

Those are my thoughts for today and once again they are intended for the good and welfare of this thread.

<< only one blemish from perfection >>

LOL!

I just read ahead.

As for Matt Hoffman of WitSoundview ... well, I agree, it's crow eating time.

A small crow will do since small caravans of (hopefully) BIG trucks are taking their rare cargo down the streets (and hopefully to some BIG airplanes).

So is Matt Hoffman only one (or two or three) blemishes away from perfection.

Matt has also had to eat a little crow on some of his projections about royalties for Wcdma acrueing to Qualcomm.

Best,

- Eric -
