have your kids handled the attacks on the US okay?

Yes, I think they are concerned but not too fearful. We have our flag flying and exchange e-mail with relatives in NYC but otherwise don't dwell on it day in and day out. TV is more likely to be tuned into Sponge Bob than the news when it is on.

As I told you before, there is a killer in our neighborhood. 35 cats and 3 deer have been killed in the last several months, dismembered, and arranged on the lawns of families, often families with students in the local high school. The terrorist attacks in the east actually brought a break to the pattern for awhile, but alas it has begun again.

This relentless terror campaign in miniature has been harder on the kids. We spent spring vacation in D.C. so they had seen the Pentagon and the institutions that were threatened but it is still not as personal a tragedy as finding our own cat cut up or that of our neighbors. It all seems trivial when we hear the tales of how many bucket loads of dust my niece had to clean out of her apartment, but it is so quiet when I get the newspaper and no cat is yelling for breakfast.
