Imagine that the Taliban were, at one point, viewed as the best alternative, because the prior factionalism committed atrocities more repugnant.

viewed by whom?

If US, then the question is "should the US be meddling in other countries affairs?"

Would the US even care to meddle if it did not have the financial and military power?

Finally if we do meddle, should we not expect and accept reprisals?
